Dog Insurance in California

We love our dogs in California. And we love to care for our dogs by treating them to Starbucks Puppuccinos at the weekend! But what about protecting them from accidents and illness? We know that vet bills and emergency treatments can be expensive, so why would you need insurance for your puppy or adult dog? Could you afford a $2,000 or $6,000 veterinary bill if something happened to your dog? Most people could not. But dog and cat insurance premiums are some of the lowest in the insurance industry so it’s definitely worth thinking about.

Cost of Dog Insurance

According to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA) the average dog health insurance premium for accident-only policies was only $18.17 per month for dogs. So for a full 12 months cover you could be paying around $218 to protect your dog for a full year. For a higher level of cover that protects you and your pet from accident and illness, the average cost rises to $49.51 for dogs.

Cost of Dog Vet Bills

It’s very important to get the correct level cover for you and your dog to give them the very best chance to recover after an accident or illness. Even a scan like an MRI for your dog can cost over $2,000. Emergency treatments can be very expensive too, so where possible try to compare the different levels of cover and quotes before you purchase. If you are unsure of what cover you need, call one of our licensed agents and they will explain the different levels of cover and costs.

Dog Insurance Deductible

Insurance Deductible is the amount you have to pay on any claims made. For example, if your vet bill in California is $4,000 and you have an excess of $200, you will pay the $200 amount and the insurance company will pay $3,800.

Dog Insurance Annual Limit

The Annual Limit is the maximum amount of money your dog insurance carrier will reimburse you within a 12-month period. This varies depending on your dog insurance plan. Some dog insurers offer “unlimited” annual coverage limits, which means there is no cap on the reimbursement. Other pet insurance plans may have annual limits ranging from $2,000 to $20,000 for 12 months.
